Background
In 1974 a committee was appointed by the Mayor and the Town Council to restore and maintain the building once known as Thomas Potterfield's "meat store." The Lovettsville Museum and Library opened in 1979. It became the Lovettsville Historical Society Museum in 1988.

Purpose
Preserving and promoting the history and heritage of the Town of Lovettsville and the surrounding area.
Functions
- Operating and maintaining the Lovettsville Museum with its permanent display of items pertaining to a past way of life: clothing, tools, utensils, personal items, documents, phoographs, genealogy and other historical information.
- Fund-raising for the maintenance of the interior of the building and the purchase of necessities
- Organizing exhibits with special themes, including objects on loan
- Promoting awareness of the history of the area through the expansion of the present collection of genealogy and the documentation on buildings, business and organizations, past and present
- Responding to requests for information on the history of the area
- Sponsoring lectures on subjects of local interest
